Art Commission: Repentance

A friend from our church, All Souls Charlottesville, contacted me a few weeks ago about possibly commissioning me to do some photography for the season of Lent.  I jumped at the chance because I love the opportunity to push my creativity a bit and do something out of the norm.  After agreeing to the project, though, I quickly drew an artistic blank!  Sarah and I spend most of our time photographing bright and cheerful weddings and couples happily in love.  I don't really get around to photographing themes of repentance that this commission would require.  After some brainstorming and thought about the idea of repentance, I got a picture in my head of what I hoped to create.  The only remaining obstacle was finding a diverse, ready and willing group of people willing to model for me! Thankfully, when I pitched the idea to some friends, they were on board even though I gave them a purposefully vague description of what I was going for and what I wanted them to do.  I had hoped to catch them a bit off guard and use the limited amount of time I had with them to capture some thought-provoking, dramatic images that might personalize the act of repentance that this season brings out of those who follow Jesus.

I am thrilled with how they turned out and I had such a great time in the process of creating these portraits from planning to prints.  I was only asked to provide three prints which are displayed at The Garden where All Souls meets from today through Easter.  I wanted to share a few more of my favorites, though.  I hope you enjoy them.

Lara and Ben's Blue Ridge Parkway Engagement Session

Back in October, I had the pleasure of riding with Ben and Lara up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for their engagement session. I had not been up on the Parkway in quite some time so it was a great time enjoying the view, good conversation, and some special moments with a fabulous couple! These two high school sweethearts were naturals in front of the camera even though they claimed they might have a hard time relaxing and being themselves! Lara was truly a champ for these photos as well because it was frigid that evening! She never complained a bit. And we had to include the car that Ben restored in high school. I thought it was so great that he still has the car as he nears the end of medical school.

After having exhausted the first overlook, we hopped in the car and headed up the Parkway to see what we could find. As we drove towards the next overlook, I spotted this side road and made Lara turn around! It was worth the mid-Parkway u-turn, for sure!

PS - It was colder for their October engagement session than it was for their late-November wedding! This has been a crazy fall/early winter as far as weather goes!

PPS -We're dedicated to catching you all up on what we were photographing throughout the Fall.  Stay tuned!

Meet Kamryn

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting baby Kamryn!  Whitney and Randal were Sarah's doula clients and it was my pleasure to photograph them in their home.  Sweet baby.  Sweet family.  Sweet images.  Oh, and Whitney, thanks for stopping by to visit Sarah and the kids last week.  Avery hasn't stopped talking about you, so you'll have to come by again soon.  Enjoy!

PS - I'm headed out on a freezing cold photowalk tomorrow afternoon (I haven't done one since the summer!).  37 and sunny says the weatherman.  It's a good thing I'm meeting a new friend for this photo walk.  If it was just me, I'd find a warm coffee shop and just take photos out the window!  If I manage to get a few good images, I'll post them up soon.

PPS - It looks like we're probably heading to France to photograph a wedding this summer!  More details to come as things unfold, but it will involve Paris, a cathedral, and a castle!  Epic!

PPS - This is my first real venture into working with Sepia.  It's often overdone which is why I have avoided it, but in certain images like the ones above, I really love the drama and warmth it adds.  Be on the lookout for some more in the future!  Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Family portraits in Charlottesville

In July, we had the pleasure to photograph Jenny and Travis' wedding at the UVA Chapel.  It was truly one of the most fun weddings I have ever photographed.  That is partly due to the fact that Jenny, Travis, and all of Jenny's family are extremely relaxed and extremely hilarious!  That is why I was so excited when Jenny contacted me about doing a family portrait session while they were in town visiting last weekend!  We don't get around to doing as many family portraits as we used to, and I don't always post family portraits here on the wedding blog, but I had to share a few from our time together on Saturday because this was seriously the most fun I've ever had out on a portrait shoot!  I met up at the Saunders-Monticello Trail with Jenny, Travis, Jenny's parents, and Jenny's brother and his family.  We walked the trail, enjoyed the cool fall weather, and indulged in a game of mini-baseball! I was excited at the end when Jenny told me she hopes to come back down for a visit in the future for a trash the dress session!  I can't wait!

More of Kyle and Paul's Charlottesville Engagement Portraits

As I'm working through everything we have photographed so far this fall, I am so excited to share more of Kyle and Paul's engagement session!  I had such an amazing time with these two.  We had to bump up our planned time due to impending rain.  Of course, it hadn't rained in weeks before the day they drove down from Northern Virginia for their photo session!  We were able to get a lot of time together before the rains came and we carried on into the night.  The cloudy skies provided some incredible backdrops and I love how they turned out! The only problem now is that we have to wait until next October for their wedding!  Congratulations again, you two.  Enjoy!
